When we design a rhythmic gymnastics or figure skating leotard, we usually focus on the design, colors, or type of crystals. However, there is one detail that will make the difference between a professional result and one that starts losing stones after just a few training sessions: the adhesive.
After more than 20 years creating leotards for gymnasts around the world, one thing I have learned is that the quality of the bonding is just as important as the quality of the crystal.
A sports leotard demands much more
A leotard is not an everyday garment.
During training or competition, the lycra is constantly subjected to stretching, twisting, jumps, spins, and high-intensity movements. The garment is also folded, stored, transported, and worn for many hours.
That is why the adhesive must be able to follow the elasticity of the fabric without peeling off or stiffening the lycra.
Hotfix or glued one by one?
Hotfix crystals include a heat-activated adhesive that can be convenient for certain applications.
However, when we are looking for a truly professional finish and greater durability, I always recommend gluing crystals one by one with a good textile adhesive.
This type of adhesive creates a genuine bond between the crystal and the lycra, offering a much stronger hold against the intensive use typical of rhythmic gymnastics and figure skating.
What makes a good adhesive?
Not every adhesive is suitable for decorating a leotard.
The best adhesives for crystals tend to share these characteristics:
- Specific adhesion for fabrics.
- High flexibility once dry.
- Completely transparent when dry.
- No visible residue.
- Does not stiffen the lycra.
- Maintains the elasticity of the fabric.
- Allows precise crystal placement.
Drying time also matters
Many people think that the faster an adhesive dries, the better.
In reality, when it comes to placing crystals, the opposite is true.
The ideal adhesive stays wet for a few minutes. That small window allows you to apply tiny drops of glue and place each crystal calmly, adjusting its position if needed.
Once the work is done, the adhesive finishes drying and becomes completely transparent, forming a strong and flexible bond.
Less adhesive, better results
One of the most common mistakes is using too much adhesive.
A small drop is enough to correctly fix each crystal.
When too much is applied:
- the adhesive may overflow around the crystal;
- the finish loses neatness;
- it takes longer to dry;
- and it can unnecessarily stiffen the area.
In leotard decoration, precision always delivers better results than quantity.
My recommended adhesives
Over the years I have tested many adhesives for textiles and crystals.
Among those that have given me the best results are brands such as Cléopâtre Textile, along with other specialized adhesives widely used by professionals in the field.
Each one has its advantages, but they all share something fundamental: they offer a flexible, strong, and long-lasting bond on elastic fabrics.
My recommendation
If you have spent hours designing and creating a leotard, it is worth taking a few extra minutes to place the crystals correctly.
Gluing them one by one with a good textile adhesive provides a much cleaner, more professional, and more durable finish than relying solely on the Hotfix adhesive built into some crystals.
In the end, a great leotard should not only impress on competition day. It should keep on shining just as brightly after many training sessions, trips, and performances.
