Installing an invisible zipper in a rhythmic gymnastics leotard is one of the most important steps to achieving a professional finish.
It’s not just about sewing…
It’s about ensuring it’s invisible, doesn't bunch up, and fits the gymnast’s body perfectly.
Today, I’m sharing the method I use after more than 20 years of experience.

🪡 Essential Material
Before you begin, make sure you are equipped correctly:
- Ballpoint needle (special for knits and lycra)
- Invisible zipper foot or narrow foot
- High-quality, flexible invisible zipper
👉 This point is key: a bad choice here will ruin the whole project.
✂️ Pattern preparation
When you cut the back of the leotard:
👉 Add a small extra margin in the area where the zipper will go (because it gets lost in the seam later)
Once placed:
- ✔️ Double-check with the pattern
- ✔️ Adjust and trim if necessary
💡 It’s better to be sure at this stage than to correct it later.
📏 Initial marking and “guide” stitch
- Mark the center back
- Mark the exact length of the zipper
Now, perform a key step:
👉 Make a “guide” stitch (with minimal separation, just enough to be able to cut)
🔑 Important:
- Stop 2–3 cm below the actual length of the zipper
- Cut along the center of that stitch
This is not a coincidence… 👉 This is where the professional trick comes in.
🔺 The final dart: the secret to a perfect fit
By leaving those 2–3 cm uncut:
👉 A small triangular dart forms at the end
This dart allows you to:
- Perfectly adjust the end of the zipper
- Prevent bunching in the lumbar area
- Achieve a clean, professional finish
💎 This is one of the details that makes the difference between an amateur leotard and a high-level one.

📌 Zipper preparation
Before installing it, mark the following on the zipper:
- Start
- Key markers (neckline, waist…)
- End
👉 This will allow you to align both sides with total precision.
🧵 Basting (fundamental step)
- Baste the zipper before sewing
- Match each mark with its reference point
⚠️ Very important:
- 👉 Do not stretch the lycra
- 👉 Guide it gently so it sits naturally and without tension
🔍 Check before sewing
Before moving to the machine, close the zipper and check:
- That it fits perfectly
- That it doesn't pull
- That it doesn't ripple
✔️ If it’s perfect → sew
❌ If not → correct it now
⚙️ Final sewing
- Sew with the appropriate presser foot
- Without stretching the fabric
- Adjusting well to the invisible teeth
✨ Final finish
If you find it necessary:
👉 You can secure it with a small topstitch on the right side (only to prevent discomfort)

🎯 Conclusion
The key isn't just sewing well…
It’s about understanding how the garment behaves.
👉 That small detail of the final dart is what ensures:
- ✔️ The zipper doesn’t deform
- ✔️ The leotard conforms to the body
- ✔️ The finish is clean and professional
“What you can't see… is what makes the difference.”
