The big mistake when making custom jerseys: constantly modifying the pattern instead of working with a good base.

A poorly made pattern forces you to correct, a good pattern lets you create

Many rhythmic gymnastics leotard designers believe that making a custom leotard means creating a new pattern from scratch for every gymnast.

And that is precisely one of the biggest mistakes in pattern-making for this garment.

Because when you work with a poorly constructed pattern, everything becomes trial and error: adjusting the neckline, modifying armholes, tweaking sleeves, redoing the waist, correcting the crotch, raising the skirt, lowering the back...

And even then, the leotard often still doesn't fit correctly.

Especially when you work remotely and cannot test the garment on the gymnast.

The fear that many designers know

If you make custom leotards, you surely know that feeling.

You finish a beautiful leotard.
Hours of painting.
Rhinestones.
Sewing.
Handcrafted decoration.

You ship it to the other end of Spain... or even the world...

And you only think:
"Please, let it fit her well."

Because when the pattern-making is not correctly developed, each new gymnast becomes an unknown.

And that is where the problems begin:

  • back with lumbar bagging
  • tight sleeves
  • poorly adjusted waist
  • skirt that rides up
  • excess tension in the crotch
  • poorly placed sheer sections
  • uncomfortable areas for competing

Often the problem is not in the design. Not even in the construction.

The problem begins much earlier: in the base of the pattern.

A leotard should not be redone from scratch every time

The reality is that professional pattern-making does not work by constantly improvising.

It works through a well-built and correctly graded system.

When you have a good pattern base:

  • you don't need to continuously distort the morphology
  • you don't need to redo the entire pattern
  • you don't need to correct each area again and again

You simply work on an already developed structure. From there, by correctly using the gymnast's measurements and playing with contours and crotch depth, you can adapt the pattern while maintaining the correct morphology of the leotard.

And that is the real difference between a professional system and a generic pattern.

The importance of understanding elastic fabric

One of the most frequent mistakes is forgetting that elastic fabrics do not behave like conventional fabric.

The lycras used in rhythmic gymnastics can stretch between 5 and 10 centimeters depending on the fabric, the direction of the stretch, and the tension applied to the body.

That is why good pattern-making must account for:

  • actual fabric tensions
  • waist adjustment
  • crotch depth
  • back elasticity
  • sleeve performance
  • mobility in competition
  • balance between fit and comfort

It is not just about "making it small." It is about building a functional second skin for an athlete who needs total freedom of movement.

Working remotely is possible... if the pattern-making is well developed

For years I have worked making custom leotards for gymnasts from different countries without the need for constant fittings.

And that is only possible when you start from a well-developed pattern-making system.

That is why my Tanitex system incorporates guide lines in key areas of the pattern, allowing you to adapt special measurements without deforming the original structure of the leotard.

The goal is not to improvise. The goal is to work with confidence.

The difference between copying a pattern and developing a system

Many people try to start by using:

  • generic patterns from the internet
  • basic leotards opened up and traced
  • patterns without professional grading
  • systems that do not account for athletic morphology

But a rhythmic gymnastics leotard requires much more. Because it doesn't just need to look pretty.

It must:

  • fit correctly
  • follow the movement
  • withstand competition
  • flatter the figure
  • avoid uncomfortable tensions
  • remain stable during exercises

And all of that begins in the pattern-making.

My Tanitex Digital Pattern-Making Kit

Behind every spectacular leotard is a woman who first had to imagine it - Tanitex

After nearly 20 years dressing gymnasts from all over the world, I developed my own base pattern-making system specialized in rhythmic gymnastics.

The Tanitex Digital Kit is ready to be sent anywhere in the world directly to your email and includes:

  • ✨ TIFF files in A0 to print at full size
  • ✨ PDF with graded pattern-making
  • ✨ Step-by-step explanatory guide
  • ✨ Guide lines to work with special measurements and adapt contours without deforming the morphology

And furthermore, through my private Instagram community, I offer daily support, troubleshooting, and specialized content on pattern-making, rhinestones, painting, and rhythmic gymnastics leotard construction.

Because a spectacular leotard does not start with the decoration.
