Inserting an invisible zipper in a rhythmic gymnastics leotard is one of the most important steps to achieve a professional finish.
It's not just about sewing…
It's about making sure it's invisible, doesn't pucker, and fits the gymnast's body perfectly.
Today I'll walk you through the method I've been using for over 20 years of experience.
🪡 Essential Materials
Before you start, make sure you have the right tools:
- Ballpoint needle (specially designed for knit and lycra fabrics)
- Invisible zipper foot or half-shank presser foot
- Flexible, high-quality invisible zipper
👉 This is crucial: a poor choice here will ruin all your hard work.
✂️ Pattern Preparation
When cutting the back of the leotard:
👉 Add a small extra seam allowance where the zipper will go (because it gets lost in the seam)
Once the zipper is in place:
- ✔️ Check against the pattern again
- ✔️ Trim and adjust if needed
💡 Better to be safe at this stage than to fix it later.
📏 Initial Marking and "Alley" Stitch
- Mark the center back
- Mark the exact zipper length
Now comes a key step:
👉 Sew an "alley" stitch (with minimal separation, just enough to cut through)
🔑 Important:
- Stop 2–3 cm short of the actual zipper length
- Cut through the center of that stitch
This is intentional… 👉 This is where the professional trick happens.
🔺 The Final Dart: The Secret to a Perfect Fit
By leaving those 2–3 cm uncut:
👉 A small triangular dart forms at the bottom
This dart allows you to:
- Perfectly adjust the end of the zipper
- Prevent puckering in the lower back area
- Achieve a clean, professional finish
💎 This is one of the details that sets a professional leotard apart from an amateur one.

📌 Zipper Preparation
Before placing it, mark on the zipper:
- Start point
- Key notches (neckline, waist…)
- End point
👉 This will allow you to align both sides with total precision.
🧵 Basting (A Fundamental Step)
- Baste the zipper before sewing
- Match each mark to its reference point
⚠️ Very important:
- 👉 Do not stretch the lycra
- 👉 Guide it gently so it lies naturally without tension
🔍 Check Before Sewing
Before going to the machine, close the zipper and check:
- It aligns perfectly
- It doesn't pull
- It doesn't create waves
✔️ If it's perfect → sew
❌ If not → correct it now
⚙️ Final Sewing
- Sew with the appropriate presser foot
- Without stretching the fabric
- Guiding the invisible teeth carefully
✨ Final Finish
If needed:
👉 You can secure the end with a small topstitch on the right side (just to prevent any discomfort)

🎯 Conclusion
The key isn't just sewing well…
It's understanding how the garment behaves.
👉 That small detail of the final dart is what ensures:
- ✔️ The zipper doesn't distort
- ✔️ The leotard fits the body perfectly
- ✔️ The finish is clean and professional
"What you can't see… is what makes all the difference."
