Sublimated rhythmic gymnastics leotards: why design is useless without a good base pattern

Sublimated leotards have revolutionized part of the rhythmic gymnastics world.

They allow for the creation of spectacular designs, full of color, gradients, visual effects, and finishes impossible to achieve using only traditional techniques.

But there is a major mistake many people make when they start working with sublimation:

Thinking that the most important thing is learning Illustrator or Photoshop.

And it's not.

The most important thing remains pattern making.

Because you can create the most spectacular design in the world... but if the morphology of the pattern you send to be sublimated is not well constructed, the final result will never work correctly on the gymnast.

What is a sublimated leotard?

Sublimation is a textile printing system that allows designs to be printed directly onto spandex before the leotard is assembled.

The process usually works like this:

  1. First, the design is created digitally using programs like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or CorelDRAW.
  2. The design is created on a digitized leotard pattern.
  3. Next, the file is sent to a company specializing in textile sublimation.
  4. Using a calender (a large-format industrial printer), the design is transferred onto the spandex using heat.
  5. Finally, the printed pieces are cut, sewn, and can subsequently be decorated with rhinestones, glitter, appliqués, paint, and handcrafted details.

The result can be visually spectacular.

The big problem with many sublimated leotards

This is where one of the most common mistakes appears.

Many people learn to use Illustrator, create incredible designs, and believe that is enough to manufacture professional leotards.

But they forget something fundamental:

Sublimation does not correct a bad pattern.

In fact, a bad sublimated pattern is usually even more noticeable. Because:

  • the design lines become distorted
  • the cuts do not fit correctly
  • the proportions change on the body
  • the patterns shift
  • the back pulls
  • the crotch does not fit
  • the sleeves distort the design
  • and the leotard's morphology loses harmony

And the problem there is not the sublimation. The problem is the base you are working on.

Pattern making remains the most important thing

It doesn't matter if you work artisanally, hand-painted, with rhinestones, sublimated, or combined. Everything starts with pattern making.

That is why I always recommend that anyone who wants to work with sublimated leotards should have their own well-developed and correctly tested base pattern.

Because there is no point in mastering Illustrator if the digitized pattern you send to be printed does not have a good morphology.

The importance of working on a professional digitized pattern

When a pattern is well-structured:

  • the design maintains its proportions
  • the visual lines fit correctly
  • the gradients do not become distorted
  • the placement of the drawing flatters the figure
  • and the leotard truly adapts to the gymnast's body

In addition, working on your own pattern allows you to control the fit, maintain a coherent aesthetic line, adapt special measurements, and work remotely with greater security.

Especially in rhythmic gymnastics, where the leotard must practically become a second skin.

A sublimated leotard still requires artisanal construction

Another misconception is thinking that a sublimated leotard is "already finished" once it comes out of the printer.

And it's not. After sublimation:

  • each piece must be cut correctly
  • sewn while respecting tensions
  • elasticities must be controlled
  • transparencies adjusted
  • linings placed
  • sleeves and crotch balanced
  • and often manual decoration added

That is why the best sublimated leotards usually combine:
✨ digital technology
✨ professional pattern making
✨ and artisanal finishes

My professional recommendation

After years of working on rhythmic gymnastics leotards, my recommendation is always the same:

Before learning sublimation… learn pattern making.

Because the real secret is not just in the visual design. It is in the invisible structure that supports the entire leotard.
