Sublimated rhythmic gymnastics leotards: why design means nothing without a good base pattern

Sublimated leotards have revolutionised part of the rhythmic gymnastics world.

They allow the creation of spectacular designs, full of colour, gradients, visual effects and finishes impossible to achieve with traditional techniques alone.

But there is a big mistake that many people make when they start working with sublimation:

Thinking that the most important thing is to learn Illustrator or Photoshop.

And it's not.

The most important thing is still the pattern making.

Because you can create the most spectacular design in the world… but if the morphology of the pattern you send to sublimate is not well constructed, the final result will never work correctly on the gymnast.

What is a sublimated leotard?

Sublimation is a textile printing system that allows designs to be printed directly onto the lycra before the leotard is made.

The process usually works like this:

  1. First, the design is worked digitally using programmes such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop or CorelDRAW.
  2. The design is created over a vectorised pattern of the leotard.
  3. The file is then sent to a company specialising in textile sublimation.
  4. Using a calender (a large-format industrial printer), the design is transferred onto the lycra using heat.
  5. Finally, the printed pieces are cut, sewn and can then be decorated with rhinestones, glitter, appliqués, paint and handcrafted details.

The result can be visually spectacular.

The big problem with many sublimated leotards

This is where one of the most common mistakes appears.

Many people learn to use Illustrator, create incredible designs and think that is already enough to make professional leotards.

But they forget something fundamental:

Sublimation does not fix a bad pattern.

In fact, a bad sublimated pattern tends to be even more noticeable. Because:

  • the design lines become distorted
  • the cuts do not fit correctly
  • proportions change on the body
  • the drawings shift
  • the back pulls
  • the crotch does not fit
  • the sleeves distort the design
  • and the morphology of the leotard loses harmony

And there the problem is not the sublimation. The problem is the base you are working on.

Pattern making is still the most important thing

It does not matter whether you work with handcraft, hand-painted, rhinestones, sublimation or a combination. Everything starts with the pattern.

That is why I always recommend that anyone who wants to work with sublimated leotards has their own well-developed and correctly tested base pattern.

Because there is no point in mastering Illustrator if the vectorised pattern you send to print does not have a good morphology.

The importance of working on a professional vectorised pattern

When a pattern is well structured:

  • the design maintains its proportions
  • the visual lines fit correctly
  • the gradients do not distort
  • the placement of the design flatters the figure
  • and the leotard truly adapts to the gymnast's body

In addition, working on your own pattern allows you to control the fit, maintain a coherent aesthetic line, adapt special measurements and work remotely with greater confidence.

Especially in rhythmic gymnastics, where the leotard must become practically a second skin.

A sublimated leotard still needs handcrafted construction

Another misconception is thinking that a sublimated leotard is "already finished" when it comes out of the printer.

And it's not. After sublimating:

  • each piece must be cut correctly
  • sewn respecting tensions
  • elasticity must be controlled
  • transparencies adjusted
  • linings placed
  • sleeves and crotch balanced
  • and manual decoration is often added

That is why the best sublimated leotards usually combine:
✨ digital technology
✨ professional pattern making
✨ and handcrafted finishes

My professional recommendation

After years working on rhythmic gymnastics leotards, my recommendation is always the same:

Before learning sublimation… learn pattern making.

Because the real secret is not only in the visual design. It is in the invisible structure that holds the entire leotard together.
